Steve Jobs: A Book Review

By RD Bentley on March 3, 2012 in The Book Shelf

The biography about the businessman behind Apple, Inc. — Steve Jobs, authored by Walter Isaacson — is a very telling and thorough work. Here’s a brief review to describe a few poignant iterations.

This masterpiece skillfully weaves together a synopsis about an important era, a dominant corporation called Apple, the key players, and a notably influential man who would change how consumers would absorb technology. While Walter Isaacson’s book has already acquired best seller status, only time will tell how the book shall help to carve the legacy of the man of Palo Alto.

Isaacson leaves no stone unturned in his lengthy compendium about the famous icon and his extraordinary journey. Steve Jobs and his friends in Cupertino, California would create household gadgets that would become phenomenally celebrated and go on to essentially change the universe.

After having a fallout with Apple, Jobs would buy a struggling Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs would serve as chief executive of Pixar, and in a last effort to save the company, he would cut deals and be directly involved with the world’s first completely computer-animated full-length feature film called Toy Story, which was a top-grossing film on its opening weekend. Jobs is often overlooked for his input at Pixar and his influence with Disney.

It is extremely rare for any man to achieve such wealth, status, and acclaim; and yet it’s even more astonishing when such a mortal from a middle class background advances in a world that favors the elite. Steve Jobs has achieved greatness and has become a legend in the meantime. He was the epitome of everything a successful modern businessman should be. Many of today’s youth have lived vicariously through his monumental accomplishments.

Elements that were dynamic in every step of the way are captured by Isaacson — from a boy with a complicated childhood, to a bright salesman who was ousted from his own company, to a brilliant middle-aged idol who regains a foothold and pushes himself and his company beyond the limits of innovation.

Exposure and credit is rightfully given to the potent team at Apple, collectively and individually, without skipping a beat. All the names of friends, enemies, and family come to life in this work, which is the product of more than forty rare interviews. Jobs even hands over some personal photographs of himself, his wife Laurene Powell, his children, and reflections throughout his considerable career.

Walter Isaacson offers the public a book which shares a more personal side of Steve Jobs and his circle of associates, along with the roller-coaster ride that often comes with success.

After reading the book, I walk away with a clearer comprehension of how the technology industry works, a better understanding of Apple and its products, and an unambiguous perspective of where technology has been, as well as where it might be heading. It is my personal opinion that any historian would be much better equipped with this book on his or her desk.

Walter Isaacson deserves a huge round of applause for writing such a complete, precise, entertaining, and exclusive biography. Steve and his wife Laurene both deserve a thank you for sharing their private moments in a public venue. After all, it was Steve’s idea to have a biography written about himself.

In a modern, digital-age society in which America strives to retain the lead in technology, a marketing genius named Steve Jobs created a reality distortion field that moved beyond the stratosphere. Isaacson captures the story of how a driven man that had demons of his own would accomplish remarkable feats of engineering. A man who clearly saw the future and did something about it — Steve Jobs.

Social Media Data On Sale

By RD Bentley on February 29, 2012 in Social Air, Technology

Data On Demand Is Creating A New Market

Social media data is on sale now. If you are a member of Twitter or Facebook and you regularly indulge in social media, here’s a bit of trivia that might be compelling to you. Twitter is trafficking your tweets to at least two different marketers; those being Datasift and Gnip.

Twitter is one among the many that is being monitored. There are others and it appears that the integration is snowballing rapidly. Your social media data is being collected from websites such as Twitter, Facebook, and other similar sources. This data is filtered and will eventually be up for grabs to other companies. Do you feel violated yet?

The imported data is composed of your past two years of social media activity, including your real time updates. What type of input is being extracted? Locations, opinions, conversation topics, and even your visited links are documented.

Anyone recall Representative Anthony D. Weiner, and the infamous Weiner scandal? Insert recapitulation here. Your secrets are not really secrets at all.

Companies and individuals that can afford it will be able to access all of this data for a price — a form of intelligence if you will. This cornucopia of information could turn up some very valuable insights.

We are venturing through some unchartered territory here, because for the first time in modern history, we have the technology to gather and analyze the data. The potential, the possibilities, and applications could be analogous to buried treasure. The social media market could turn into a privacy issue in the end, however.

We’re talking about financial data, political events, musical tastes, trends, and lists that seem endless. Obviously, there’s going to be a lot of idle chatter that will mean nothing. And how to tell if someone is being truthful about the topic? There are many variants to consider.

Best Buy Dropping Price On iPad 2

BestBuy is running a discount on a tablet PC, which will be a discount of approximately $50.00. The news is out that Apple will introduce the iPad 3 in San Francisco, on March 7, 2012. This report reveals what to look out for at the event.

Best Buy is also running a sale on the Apple iPod. The prices on several iPod models are decreasing for sure. There are some really good deals on the Apple iPods at BestBuy.

Apple will hold the event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), as it has held events there before.

A report from the Los Angeles Times reminds us of what happened in 2011:

The iPad 2 was unveiled on March 2, 2011 by then-CEO Steve Jobs, who came back from his medical leave to unveil the device at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. The iPad 2 went on sale the following week, March 11, 2011.

What top 5 features to expect with the iPad 3? This CNETTV video gives us some idea.

In Search Of The Photo Album

By RD Bentley on February 26, 2012 in Technology

The digital revolution is going through rapid changes even at this very moment. After all, digital photography didn’t become popular until just a few short years ago. In our fragile minds we can hardly process the thought of shooting pictures with film. However, if my memory will serve me correctly, my search of the photo album in the chain stores has left me empty-handed.

There’s another issue here also — the proper name. Shall we call it a photo album or a photo book? I prefer to think of it as a photo album, but either term will do.

I cannot understand why photo albums are so difficult to find these days in department stores. Have you encountered this same problem? You now have high quality digital cameras that are capable of shooting hundreds of pictures in a relatively short time. Doesn’t that translate into more photo albums for storage? Is the physical photo not as popular as it once was?

Once I located them online, I have found that there are professional photo albums, color options, bookshelf photo albums, modern, casual, comtemporary, traditional, along with furniture and decor! Now I’m getting somewhere!

There are digital picture frames, however I don’t know how reliable these new gadgets are. They seem to be gaining in popularity. There are complaints in the review section.

Please forgive me, because somehow I’ve landed in the patio, lawn, & garden section. Spring is nearing. (Which will require more digital pictures?)

Does Your Wristband Have A Purpose?

By RD Bentley on February 26, 2012 in Trends

Wristbands, Ties, And Mayan Clothing

Wristbands are making a comeback, or at least that’s what the fashion aficionados are proclaiming. Mens bracelets are increasing in sales, supposedly. However, does your wristband have a purpose? That’s assuming you wear one.

The Nike Sportband does claim to have a purpose, while being stylish at the same time.

If you run, jog, walk, or are into physical fitness, Nike is offering a running partner to go. Take the sportband off and hook it up via USB on the computer. This will provide you with data that can easily be shared on Facebook or Twitter. So could this be called a social wristband?

It seems like accessories, scarves, and neckties are fashionable once again. Yes, ties are making a comeback as well. It appears that the formal suit and tie is now preferred; when just a few years ago the casual polo shirt was indeed the hip wear of the day.

In the end, one will wear what one has in the closet and what feels right at the time. Or perhaps, should we dress appropiately for the Mayan calendar forecast? Maybe we should just ignore the world countdown hype.

Original or not, I have a proposal. Let’s dress like the Mayan people! There’s the Huipil for the ladies, and maybe some bright short pants for the guys. Maya clothing in the finest! With or without the bracelet of course.

Smart Interaction Gesture Controlled HDTV Offered By Samsung

Samsung has ushered in the age of the smart TV. With the Samsung 7500 and 8000 series, the television experience will certainly change as we gaze into the near future. Samsung has revealed some 2012 HDTVs earlier in the year.

Samsung will market the 55-inch OLED’s probably this coming spring.

A video (courtesy of CrunchTechie) demonstrates just how this new technology will change our recreational habits.

Your new smart TV will recognize keywords or trigger words that will activate as well as deactivate the functions. There will be voice control, emotion control, and facial recognition. You will say “Hi TV” when you want to start the procedure.

A wave of the hand will be a mouse, or cursor.

Samsung highlighted some of its 2012 HDTVs at the Consumer Electronics Show.
