Are the health experts correct when implying that the 90% saturated fat is harmful to humans? Is their charge overhyped ballyhoo or does it have any validity? Is this claim truth or myth? Is it good for you, the Coconut Oil?
“Coconut oil can be used as a skin moisturizer, helping with dry skin and was shown in one study to reduce protein loss when used in hair.”
The Lauric acid found in coconut oil is also found in human breast milk.
According to Dr Mercola, saturated fat is being unfairly vilified for commercial reasons, and the trans fat is the real culprit to watch for. “Although trans fats are edible, consumption of trans fats has shown to increase the risk of coronary heart disease.”
In fact, a study from Harvard explains the following:
“Trans fat has been shown to consistently be associated, in an intake-dependent way, with risk of coronary heart disease, the worldwide leading cause of death.”
While some foods do not come with labels on them, the ones that are labeled are required to list the trans fat. The FDA once estimated that approximately 95 percent of prepared cookies, 100 percent of crackers, and 80 percent of frozen breakfast products contained trans fat.
“Hydrogenation of unsaturated fats produces saturated fats, and in the case of partial hydrogenation, trans fats may be generated as well.” The biggest part of hydrogenation is for the processing of vegetable oils.
Wilhelm Normann introduced hydrogenation of fats in 1901, and in 1909, Procter & Gamble acquired the US rights to the patent. A popular product called Crisco used this method of hydrogenation, but changes have been made in the last few decades. Even the so called ‘trans-fat free’ version was discontinued.
The trend is a trans-fat-free future.
“Coconut milk is a very popular food ingredient used in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Southern China, the Caribbean and north of South America.”
The famous piña colada drink is made from these ingredients: Cream Coconut, pineapple juice, and rum, usually served either blended or shaken with ice. This would be one of the most healthy drinks on the planet if the rum was excluded. It reminds me of The Pina Colada Song.
