The Ship That Would Cost $13 Billion

Austerity say ye? Not enough food for the poor, or lack of shelter for the homeless? No funding for crumbling infrastructure?

What about a warship that will cost taxpayers approximately $13 billion ($12.8 billion + $4.7 billion R&D) and possibly more? The warship is called the USS Gerald R. Ford and is planned to be commissioned in March of 2016. Construction is 93% complete on this ‘technological marvel’ as of September 2015.

The ship requires 25% fewer crew members, so there goes more jobs. But no problem though. The 19,000 workers will have the opportunity to build another one of the same kind by year 2020 if they’re lucky. Empire building isn’t cheap you know.

The Nimitz-class supercarriers are nuclear-powered. “As a result of the use of nuclear power, the ships are capable of operating for over 20 years without refueling.” There are two A1B nuclear reactors equipped for the USS Gerald R. Ford.

Good old Rummy promised a favor to President Ford a few weeks before his death in 2006.

The Ford Class: The Navy’s first aircraft carrier to be completely designed using a 3-dimensional product model, is the Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).
