Putin Replaces RIA Novosti with Russia Today

Vladimir Putin has announced that the RIA Novosti news agency will be replaced by the Russia Today news. And it “will take over all property owned by RIA Novosti in the country and abroad,” according to B92 News.

“On 9 December 2013 President of Russia Vladimir Putin ordered RIA Novosti’s liquidation and the creation of International Information Agency Russia Today,” more commonly known as Russia Today.

An article in the New York Times emphasized the recent protests in the Ukraine, probably one reason Putin has scrapped RIA Novosti. Maybe he is trying to consolidate the news in order to contain the publicity.

Twitter users will note that there were pictures trending of Ukraine protesters toppling the Lenin statue in the city of Kiev.

Jobless Rate Lowest In 5 Years; Food Assistance Higher Than Ever?

It’s phenomenal that some say the economy is blossoming and the jobless rate is the lowest that it has been in 5 years. Hold on to that thought because another phenomenon is occurring; an incredible amount of Americans have simply stopped looking for employment. The unemployed are being shuffled into another category—the invisible.

“After years of frustrating fits and starts after the financial crisis and the Great Recession, the US job market finally appears to be on a path of steady but sustainable improvement. The unemployment rate in November fell to its lowest level since the end of 2008.”

On a more dismal note, food assistance is higher than it has been in decades.

“A record 47.8 million people are enrolled in the program despite the recession’s end and a stronger economy.”

Ostensibly there is a new paradigm in the way the economy is being tracked. Obviously a slant is being reported when there is a real problem that cannot be hidden, while millions of productive Americans would like to find honest paying jobs, yet the reality of it is another matter.

The Great Recession should be more properly named the Great Experiment. Where will this Great Experiment lead to? Nearly 50 million jobless or underemployed people with very little hope of improvement, and the stronger economy garners encouraging gains.

The $15-an-hour Minimum Wage Standard

It’s the economy, stupid

The city of SeaTac, located near Seattle, has voted for a law that raised minimum wage to $15-an-hour. This is a clear victory for workers, yet a recount could be forthcoming. A march from SeaTac to Seattle was scheduled.

While emphasis of the recent passage could have been played down, restaurant and retail workers across America are set to strike in protest of low wages.

Income equality is a theme that is underscored across many cities in America, as young and old Americans struggle just to make ends meet. New minimum wage increases may not be the answer to the problem, but citizens are feeling the pain and the urge to do something about it is gaining momentum.

This is systematic of a country with much bigger problems such as unemployment, underemployment, loss of rights, and the massive money behind the lobbies that create such conditions. Corporations are reaping massive profits at the expense of the rest of society. The economy has changed.

Legislation and lobbyists have created this environment and the effects of these policies are now being witnessed. Central planners and policy makers have create this beast, and many think that NAFTA was the beginning of the end.

Raising the minimum wage may help to alleviate the immediate symptoms, but this will not be a solution to the underlying current. More jobs, better quality jobs, and more job training would seem to be better options.
